GEDCOM Fix

GEDCOM to Excel Converter

Turn a GEDCOM file into a real Excel workbook of individuals — useful when you need an .xlsx file specifically, rather than plain CSV, for sharing or further formatting.

Runs in your browser · nothing is uploaded

Everything happens inside your browser — the file is never uploaded, and we never see it.

What this tool does

The converter parses your GEDCOM file locally and builds an Excel workbook with one row per individual, resolving each person's FAMC and FAMS pointers to their parents' and spouses' actual names rather than leaving raw record IDs like @I42@ in the output — see Understanding GEDCOM's Level/Tag/Value Structure for how those pointers work in the source file.

Who this is for

Anyone who specifically needs an Excel file rather than CSV — for example, to hand off to someone who will apply their own formatting, filters, or formulas on top of the exported data.

CSV or Excel?

Both tools export the same columns from the same data. Choose GEDCOM to CSV if you just need the raw data in the widest-compatible format; choose this tool if you specifically need a native .xlsx workbook.

Common questions

Does this tool upload my GEDCOM file anywhere?
No. The conversion, including generating the .xlsx file itself, happens entirely in your browser. Your file is never sent to our servers.
Is this a real .xlsx file, or a renamed CSV?
It's a genuine Excel workbook, built directly in your browser — not a CSV file with an .xlsx extension. If you just need a plain-text spreadsheet, the GEDCOM to CSV Converter is lighter and opens just as well in Excel.
What columns does it include?
ID, Name, Sex, Birth Date, Birth Place, Death Date, Death Place, Father, Mother, and Spouse(s) — one row per individual, with parent and spouse columns resolved to names rather than GEDCOM record IDs.
My download didn't start — what happened?
A small number of older or locked-down browsers block the in-browser file generation this tool relies on. If that happens, the GEDCOM to CSV Converter uses a simpler, more broadly compatible download method and contains the same data.
